about

This 5-track offering sees the Parisian producer widen his palette of sonic references and push his rave-meets-Baile-Funk sound even further than we’ve heard on previous releases on Boukan Records or his own Big Brothers imprint.

Worlds collide on EP opener ‘Baile da Aishwarya’, where Bollywood vocals rub right up against classic funk samples from Rio de Janeiro - warped almost beyond recognition. Next up on ‘Diluente’ is the EP’s hypnotic title track. The track opens with swell of sustained strings and heavily applied reverb before giving way to an earth-shattering bassline and heavily manipulated samples. Despite the ‘acoustic’ nature of the instruments deployed here, Amor Satyr’s aggressive processing gives the drum and string sounds a harsh, mechanical edge.

Midway through the EP, ‘Qunk’ keeps the tempo and energy of Satyr’s release high with endlessly stuttering drum hits and a broad selection of snatched vocals. Showing further cross-pollination of references, the heavy resonance of the bass synth is reminiscent of UK Funky productions whilst the drum arrangements nod subtly to Durban’s Gqom scene.

On ‘Vai’, Amor Satyr aims for full on sonic disorientation. It’s a polyrhythmic heater which seamlessly moves between a funk loop and a trappy interlude whilst still retaining a sense of cohesion. The record is closed off with a vocaled version of ‘Diluente’, featuring the producers 19-year old-brother T9 on MC duties!

Whilst grounded in Baile Funk, the genre he fell in love with during summer holidays spend it Rio de Janeiro, ‘Diluente’ is a brilliantly high-tempo mission statement spanning multiple sounds and scenes. We can’t wait to hear more from the relative newcomer who continues to refine and build on the Baile Funk template in mad and ever-surprising ways.
