about

Liquorish Records yet again demonstrates the breadth of the label’s output with a new release from an artist at the cutting edge of Gqom, Julz Da Deejay. A relatively unknown name in the Northern hemisphere (compared to the likes of Rudeboyz and DJ Lag), Julz Da Deejay has made a name for himself in Durban and amongst tastemakers as an innovative force of his genre, pushing the aesthetic boundaries of Gqom and its tropes.

On his debut solo release the young producer (only just into his 20s)
carves his own unique take on the arguably rigid structures of the genre; taking influence from disparate musical areas such as trance, kwaito and drum & bass.

‘Gqom in Transit’ opens with ‘Ground Shaker’, one of the more more functional tracks of the release with its thick drum sounds given space to permeate around the elements of the mix. Next up, ‘Demolition’, displays a dizzying mix of multifaceted percussion and lofty melodies, heavily nodding to trance for it’s tonal inspiration. ‘Trip to Amsterdam’ strikes a more subdued tone with it’s blend of gritty percussion and pad synths; acting almost as a palette cleanser after the head-fuck that is ‘Demolition’. Finally, ‘Midnight Bang’, a master class in dynamics and mood, rounds off the release. Much like the original trance songs of
the 90s referenced in the EP, it’s easy to get lost in Julz’ hypnotic polyrhythms and economically deployed samples on this track.

With such originality and energy in his productions, Julz Da Deejay is definitely a name to be looking out for in the future. As one of the younger generation of producers to come out of Durban and see their sound start to gain increasing attention, his ambition knows no bounds. In his own words, Gqom “will be a powerful genre in modern societies in the future and even internationally.”
